Flood water engulfed at least five power plants, forcing authorities to shut them down, according to the chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
According to power development board officials, the affected plants are the Sylhet 225MW Combined Cycle Power Plant, the 20MW Gas Turbine Power Plant, the privately owned Energyprima 50MW Power Plant, the Desh Energy 10MW Rental Power Plant, and the Shahjahanullah 25MW Power Plant under the Rural Electrification Board. Meanwhile, Petrobangla officials stated that the power plants are not at risk of being inundated because they are elevated above ground, and preventive measures have already been implemented. Eight of the country’s 22 gas fields are located in the Sylhet region.
According to the Petrobangla gas production report released on Sunday, 1,605 million cubic feet of gas were supplied to the national grid from the eight gas fields. Sylhet produces 70 per cent of the country’s total gas, with the Bibiana Gas Field alone producing over 1,500 million cubic feet.
