Moulvibazar’s traditional fragrance industry, which primarily produces and export agar and attar to various countries particularly in the Middle East, has incurred losses of at least Tk 400 crore in the previous year because of the coronavirus pandemic, as sales were slashed by nearly half due to cancellations of flights.
Based on the Bangladesh Agar and Attar Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BAMEA), nearly 350 registered and unregistered factories in the distinct export agar-attar worth close to Tk 800 crore yearly.
They stated that nearly 4 lakh people are directly or indirectly involved in this industry.
As per BAMEA, however, in excess of 50 to 60 per cent of the workers have already lost their jobs because of the pandemic. In the previous year, the annual sales declined to a paltry Tk 400 crore.
