The government has decided to again start importing LNG from the spot market due to increasing demand for industries and power plants. The Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) has directed Petrobangla to start importing LNG from the spot market this September.
Petrobangla stopped importing LNG from the spot market in the first week of August amid price increases in the spot market. As stated by the industry insiders, LNG regasification through FSRUs declined by 29.41 per cent from 850 mmcfd (million cubic per meter) to 600 mmcfd.
The subsequent short supply of gas from local gas fields caused a natural gas crisis for industries, power plants and households for one and half months which also led CNG pump stations to close from 6pm to 10pm on Sunday.
Additionally, low gas supply and low gas pressure are affecting our industrial output at factories as stated by the president of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
