One of the largest sugar producing companies in the country is Carew & Company (Bangladesh) Limited. It has produced 5,833 tons of sugar from 1 lakh 11 thousand tons of sugarcane in the 2020-21 financial year (FY).
4,841 tons of unsold sugar which is worth Tk 30.50 crore, remained in this FY 2020-21 and the reason behind is its fragile marketing policies.
In the last financial year, the company also had 4,682 tonnes of unsold sugar.
Weakness in marketing because of a huge amount of unsold sugar even though having good demand in the market is the main cause of this situation, said by Md Gias Uddin, general Manager (Agriculture) and acting managing director of Carew & Company.
Carew & Co had around 10,565 tons of sugar in the last two years. The company had sold 5,724 tons of sugar through dealers by May, 2021. Sugarcane crushing in the company started on 18 February 2020 and ended on 21 March 2021
