The misery of consumers in Bangladesh have been compounded by the rights violations, with the number of complaints increasing an astonishing 61 per cent within a year.
Consumers placed 14,764 complaints to the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) during the fiscal year of 2020-21, an increase from 9,195 complaints from the previous year. During the fiscal year of 2018-19, the DNCRP received 7,515 complaints from consumers on different grounds.
The directorate recorded a total of 47,738 complaints since the fiscal year of 2013-14.
But, 44,630 complaints have been resolved, while 6,935 entities have been penalised.
The directorate officials fined various entities over different consumer rights breaches, including the sale of goods, medicine or services at a price higher than the fixed rate.
