According to a Divisional Agriculture Office official in Sylhet, the sudden floods in Sylhet have wreaked havoc not only on human lives but also on crops and vegetables, potentially raising the prices of these items in the local market.
According to Md Kazi Mojibur Rahman, deputy director of the Divisional Agriculture Office in Sylhet, the unprecedented flood has damaged Aush Paddy on approximately 53,400 hectares of land in the Sylhet area. At the same time, the flood damaged Aman Paddy (bona aman) on 14,600 hectares of land, according to Rahman. Furthermore, the flash flood has destroyed vegetables on approximately 6,300 hectares of land, according to the official. “The total crop and vegetable loss will be around Tk500 crore,” Rahman estimated.
A list of crop and vegetable damage will be handed over to the relevant ministry, and the government’s assistance will be sought so that the farmers there can get rid of the situation, he said.
