The government is procuring 3 cargoes of LNG from the spot market. The Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase has approved 12 proposals regarding the import of LNG.
Petrobangla will supply 130-140 Crore cubic feet of gas against the demand of 225.2 crore cubic feet. Amid the rise of LNG prices it increased the supply in July.
The gas shortages have affected the textile and apparel sector with industry insiders fearing to lose orders due to reduced production where the sector is also facing low gas pressure sometimes as low as 1.5 PSI. The sector is also facing difficulty in supplying yarn on time keeping its price at tolerable level amid the price increase of cotton.
Energy adviser to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) also doubts that there would be any benefit from purchasing in the spot market due to capacity.
