The fortunes of Gopalganj’s fish farmers and fishermen are expected to change with the opening of the Padma Bridge on June 25.
The district’s fishermen see a ray of hope and anticipate a profit of over Tk200 crore from the fisheries sector. As a result, the fishermen are hoping that the Padma Bridge will allow them to travel to Dhaka and sell their catch directly to buyers and consumers. Fish farming has enabled over 17,000 people from the district’s five upazilas to become subsistence farmers. According to data from the district Fisheries Office, there are 16,998 ponds and farms in the district, with 16,185 farmers producing over 30,200 tons of fish, including Rohu, Catla, Mrigal carp, Pangas, Tilapia, and Grass carp.
More than 40,952 tons of fish are produced from various sources, with an average selling price of Tk200 per kg.
