A press briefing held at the Agriculture Ministry saw Agriculture Minister forecasting 22.5 million tonnes of Boro rice production in the fiscal year 2022-23, surpassing the government’s target by 1 million tonnes. The minister stated that Boro cultivation was set at 49.76 lakh hectares, and the farmers cultivated the crop on approximately 50 lakh hectares of land. The production target was set at 21.5 million tonnes, and the minister expected that the actual production would exceed it.
The cultivation of paddy was favourable in the fields this year, and farmers in haor areas were harvesting the crop without any difficulties, according to minister. He also mentioned that 90% of the paddy in haor areas had already been harvested. The minister expressed his satisfaction with the prices of paddy, stating that farmers were selling paddy at Tk900-1,200 from the fields. In haor areas, the government is providing a 70% subsidy for agricultural machinery to overcome the labour shortage, he said. Haor areas in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Netrakona, and Brahmanbaria districts cultivated 4.52 lakh hectares of land, and the seven districts cultivated a total of 9.53 lakh hectares of land. The production target from these seven districts is 4 million tonnes.
