In the first two months of the 2023-24 fiscal year in Bangladesh, agricultural loans have seen a significant surge, with disbursements rising by 38.33% to BDT 5,308 crore, compared to BDT 3,837 crore during the same period last fiscal year. Concurrently, repayments have also escalated by 27.34% to BDT 5,250 crore, up from BDT 4,123 crore.
The total outstanding balance of agricultural loans currently stands at BDT 53,230 crore and 38 lakh, with BDT 16,870 crore being overdue. The overall default rate on these loans is at 7.37%, equivalent to BDT 3,924 crore.
Despite challenges, farmers in Bangladesh have consistently repaid more than they have borrowed, reflecting their commitment to loan repayment. Bangladesh Bank has set a higher target for agricultural and rural loan distribution for the current fiscal year, aiming to increase financial support for the agricultural sector.
