Apparel Exports to US and Germany Decline

Bangladesh’s apparel exports to major western markets, including the United States and Germany, have declined due to a decrease in clothing consumption resulting from high inflation. According to Export Promotion Bureau data, Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the US and Germany in July-April of FY23 fell by 7.13% and 7.33%, respectively. In contrast, the country’s apparel exports to non-traditional markets, such as India, Japan, and South Korea, increased by 30.80% in the first 10 months of FY23. Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the UK, the third-largest market for the country, also rose by 10.88% to $4.19 billion in the same period. Faruque Hassan, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president, said that there is significant potential to grow the exports of Bangladeshi apparel on the Asian market, and the BGMEA is working on it.

With a 24.07% share of the EU's total ready-made garment (RMG) import in terms of dollar value, Bangladesh remains the second-largest apparel import source for the EU, just behind China, which holds a 24.55% share.

The country's population growth and urbanization have fueled higher consumption, hindering the export potential of the tea industry. Tea production reached an impressive 94 million kilograms in 2022, marking a 53 percent increase from 2012. However, only 0.78 million kilograms of tea were exported, a significant drop from 2.17 million kilograms in 2020.

Vietnam Overtakes BD as Second Largest Apparel Exporter to Canada

Bangladesh's apparel exports to Canada reached $1.73 billion, a 35.2% increase compared to the previous year, while Vietnam's exports rose by 46.35% to $1.75 billion. The CPTPP provided Vietnam with duty-free access to the Canadian market, leading to its increased market share.
