A recent University Grants Commission (UGC) investigation into the Asian University of Bangladesh (AUB) has unveiled staggering financial irregularities. Former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abul Hasan Mohammad Sadek, serving without valid approval for 10 years, allegedly siphoned off 25 crore taka. The probe discovered that 5,000 student certificates bearing his signature were legally invalid, rendering all decisions made during his tenure void.
The UGC recommends dissolving the existing board of trustees and urgent formation of a new board, as the university operated without proper authorization. Furthermore, the investigation revealed embezzlement of 20 crore 64 lakh 52 thousand 462 taka through false representation of personal properties as campuses. The university’s illegal outer campuses in the country and abroad also allegedly stole crores of taka. The UGC calls for legal action, recovery of funds, and reinstatement of unlawfully dismissed staff. With the university lacking legal approval to conduct programs, immediate attention is required to address this severe corruption.
