As part of its comprehensive mutual fund sector reform, the BSEC has recently issued a new directive requiring private firms to have a minimum net worth of Tk. 10 crore to qualify as a sponsor in a mutual fund. Despite being a vibrant and thriving economy throughout the year, the mutual fund market in the country has not seen significant development. According to a study by EBL Securities, the mutual fund market in the country constitutes only 0.24 percent of the entire GDP, which is very low compared to its regional counterparts. In India, it is 16.2 percent, and in Malaysia, it is 54 percent. Additionally, a study by IDLC Finance revealed that mutual funds make up only about 3 percent of the total market capitalization on the DSE, amounting to Tk. 16,000 crore.
