At least eight foreign airlines have shown keen interest in entering the lucrative Bangladesh aviation market, indicating promising business opportunities. The number of foreign airlines operating in Bangladesh is expected to exceed 40, up from the current 33, with the anticipated launch of the third terminal at Dhaka airport in October. While this expansion may lead to potential reductions in ticket prices on various routes, concerns have been raised regarding the outflow of foreign currency from Bangladesh, particularly amidst the ongoing dollar crisis. To retain foreign currency within the country and ensure market competitiveness, experts suggest enhancing the capacity of local airlines by expanding their routes and fleets, as well as allowing the entry of more domestic carriers. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has already granted permission to Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airlines to operate flights from Bangladesh, while discussions are underway with other airlines, including Wizz Air. The introduction of new airlines will further enhance connectivity and boost travel options for passengers. However, the limited capacity of airports remains a concern for local carriers, who stress the need to address infrastructure constraints.
