The Padma Rail Link Project has achieved a significant milestone by saving Tk1,845 crore from its original Tk39,246 crore budget, with costs revised down to Tk37,401 crore. Early completion—seven months ahead of its 30 June 2025 deadline—helped avoid inflation-related costs, alongside implementing cost-effective measures, saving Tk1,223.65 crore during the implementation phase. Specific savings included Tk44.63 crore in design fees, Tk12.62 crore in environmental safeguards, and Tk676.33 crore in provisional sums. Project Director Afzal Hossain credited timely execution and prudent resource management for the savings.
Despite its early completion, the 169-km Dhaka-Jashore rail line, opening on 1 December, will operate at only one-third capacity due to a severe manpower shortage and limited rolling stock. Bangladesh Railway lacks approval for 1,680 positions and will initially run eight of the planned 24 daily trains, with only six of 14 stations operational. Travel time between Dhaka and Jashore will be cut to 3.5 hours, enhancing connectivity.
