The Hindu Dharmiyo Kalyan Trust (HDKT) is combating with financial crisis and facing difficulties running its office, the Finance Ministry stated
HDKT is a government trust that looks after the welfare of the Hindu community of Bangladesh. The funds of the trust are used to pay salaries of the trust staff and maintain crematory grounds (Smashan) and temples.
Low interest rate on term deposits that was slashed from 11 percent to 6 percent gradually over two years is the reason for the fund shortage. The Trust had deposited Tk 79 crore in a commercial bank in 2018-19 and that they used the interest to run their organization.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has asked for Tk 6 crore funds from the Ministry of Finance to keep the Hindu Kalyan Trust afloat and help them meet their concurrent expenses. It has already allocated Tk 21 crore in the last fiscal year to the trust.
