Bangladesh has seen a growth in footwear exports of 6.98 per cent from July to August, 2021. According to data published by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) the industry has exported goods worth $112.58 million against exceeding target of $106 million in 2 months.
Comparatively in the fiscal year of 2019-20, the exports of leather and leather products were $174.71 million. However, it missed its target by $1.63 million.
For the fiscal year of 2020-21, out of the total leather and leather products worth of $942 million, exports of footwear have contributed to $570 million.
As stated by the managing director Jenny’s shoes, the declined buying capacity of consumers in host countries due to the pandemic led to demand for cheap sports and synthetic footwear demand for cheap sports and synthetic footwear. Furthermore, increased use of online channels also triggered sales.
Due to the pandemic, the sector as a whole initially saw a 22 per cent decline in the fiscal year of 2019-20 but it gradually rose.
