The government will seize privately owned land over 60 bighas, according to Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam. “If there are more than 60 bighas of privately owned land, the government would seize it and take it away,” he said after a cabinet meeting on Thursday (19 May). The law does not apply, however, if the land is used for export-oriented agricultural products or any other processing enterprise. If a person owns more than 25 bighas of land, he or she must pay tax on all of them. “If the individual fails to pay the tax for three years, he or she would be punished at a rate of 6.2 per cent,” the cabinet secretary added.
