Bangladeshis spend seven times more for internet access

Bangladeshis spend 6.9 times more on the internet than the rest of the world.  According to the Surf Shark research report, Bangladesh is ranked 83rd in the world and third in the region.

Bangladesh has an index of 0.0105, which is over 86% lower than the global average. This means that Bangladeshis are overpaying for their internet access, with only 24% of the world paying more than Bangladesh.

Surfshark announced its Global Internet Value index (IVi), which is derived by dividing each country’s internet speed by internet affordability to determine which countries overpay for the internet.

BD’s IT exports soaring despite global economic crisis

Bangladesh’s information technology exports increased by 36% in the first half of the current fiscal year, leaving the global economic recession behind.

According to data from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), IT firms earned $282.77 million from July to December 2022-23, up from $208.09 million in the same half of 2021-22. The shipment of computer data-processing and hosting services was the primary driver of rising earnings. It increased from $154.82 million in the previous year to $233.55 million in the six months to December.

IT exports from Bangladesh surpassed a significant milestone in the previous fiscal year, with local enterprises and freelancers earning more than $500 million USD for the first time. Local IT firms’ export earnings increased by 95% year on year to $592.06 million in FY22.

Around 10.5 crores Bangladeshis have no internet access

Over 61.1% of the entire population in Bangladesh does not have access to the Internet according to a recent international survey.

According to the Digital 2023 Global Overview Report, over 105 million people in Bangladesh were unconnected to the internet as of January 2023, making them the fourth most unconnected people in the world.

In January 2023, there were 5.44 billion mobile phone users worldwide or 68% of the entire world’s population.

Mobile internet connection has been declining for 5 months

February 11, 2023

The number of active mobile internet connections decreased for the fifth consecutive month in December 2022, reaching 11.25 crore according to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission. From August 2022 to December, the number decreased by 35.7 lacks.

The number of broadband connections increased, reaching 1.19 crore in December 2022 when an extra 29 lakh connections were added. The BTRC data showed, there were 6.7 lacks decreased active mobile connections in December 2022. There were 18.02 crore active mobile connections in that month compared to 18.09 crore in November 2022.

According to the report, Teletak, a state-owned mobile operator, and Grameenphone, the largest mobile operator in the nation, both lost users in December 2022 as compared to the previous month there were 7.9 crores and 66.9 lakh active mobile connections with Grameenphone and Teletalk, respectively, in December 2022.
