The government increased the power tariff by 5% for the third time this year despite the fuel and energy prices are falling globally.
The weighted average price of electricity will increase from Tk 7.86 to Tk 8.25 per kilowatt hour. It was 7.13 before January. Inflation averaged 8.7 percent in the first seven months of the fiscal year which is much above the budgetary target of 5.6 percent.
The increase in power is consistent with the agreement established for the $4.7 billion loan program with the International Monetary Fund. Although budgetary subsidies for electricity and natural gas are expected to increase significantly in fiscal 2022–2023, they should still be kept within reasonable limits at 0.9 percent of GDP.
