Even though only 16% of the crop on 1.27 lakh hectares of land has been harvested, mustard seed production has already overtaken that of the previous year.
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) reports that up till February of the fiscal year 2022–23, farmers generated more than 9.59 lakh tonnes of mustard seed. The current fiscal year’s production has already surpassed last year’s yield by 1.35 lakh tonnes. The farmers produced 8.24 lakh tonnes of mustard seed in FY22.
DAE officials estimate that the remaining 16% of the land will provide an additional 1.78 lakh tonnes to the total output, with a yield of 1.40 tonnes per hectare on average. They predict that overall production will equal 11.37 lakh tonnes, up 0.26 lakh tonnes from the DAE’s FY23 target of 11.12 lakh tonnes.
