Over the week broiler chicken, sugar, garlic, and other necessary kitchen items price hike in the capital of Dhaka. The prices of other commodities, including rice, atta, eggs, and vegetables, remained high in the city markets. Traders said that the prices of chicken increased in the city markets due to a supply shortage as production of the item decreased due to the recent cold wave across the country.
Banks were hesitant to create LCs owing to a lack of dollars, which resulted in a shortage of commodities. As a result, the price of sugar, ginger, and garlic rose on the market and their supply was limited. The price of broiler chicken increased by Tk 10 a kilogram and the item sold for Tk 160–165 a kilogram on the city market. Sonalika variety of chicken sold for Tk 250–260 a kilogram. The Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association announced that the government allowed them to increase the price of unpackaged refined sugar by Tk 5 to Tk 107 per kilogram and that of packaged items by Tk 4 to Tk 112 per kilogram.Â
The price of garlic further increased by Tk 10–20 a kilogram over the week on the city markets and the local variety sold for Tk 150–160 a kilogram while the imported one sold for Tk 160–190 a kilogram on the day. The prices of ginger increased by Tk 40–50 a kilogram and the imported item sold for Tk 150–280 a kilogram while the local variety for Tk 150–200 a kilogram on the day. Over the course of the week, vegetable prices in the city markets continued to rise. On Friday, you may buy papaya for Tk. 30, and bitter gourd for Tk. 60–80, bottle gourd for Tk. 70–80, beans for Tk. 40–50, cauliflower for Tk. 30–40 each, cucumber for Tk. 40–50, potatoes for Tk. 25–30, carrot for Tk. 30–40, and tomatoes for Tk. 40–60 per kilogram. On Friday, green chiles were also offered for Tk 100 per kilogram in the city.
Eggs were still very expensive, selling for between Tk 40 and Tk 45 per hali (four pieces) at the city markets. the coarse kind of rice fetched between Tk 48 and Tk 52 per kilogram in the capital. The price per kilogram of rice was Tk 58–62 for the medium-quality variety and Tk 62–65 for the BR–28 kind, also referred to as a lower-grade Miniket.On that particular day, Najirshail and the exquisite kind of Miniket each sold for Tk 80–90 per kilogram.
In the city market, packaged soybean oil was going for Tk 185 per litre. A five-liter container of soy oil costs between Tk 890 and Tk 906 at the city markets. On Friday, palm oil traded for Tk 130–145 per liter. The commodity sold for Tk 85–90 per kilogram in the city that day as the price per gram remained high. Onions of both local and international origins were offered for between Tk 35 and Tk 45 per kilogram in the capital on Friday. Depending on size and quality, Rohita sells for Tk 340–400 per kilogram and Katla for Tk 320–380 per kilogram. Tilapia was sold for Tk 150–200 per kilogram, while pangas went for Tk 180–200 per kilogram.
