Rampal plant’s Unit-1 starts power production

After being shut down for a month due to a coal shortage, the 1320 MW Rampal power plant’s first unit will start producing electricity again today.

According to BIFPCL, a ship carrying 30,000 tonnes of coal arrived in the country on February 9 and a second shipment carrying 50,000 tonnes is scheduled to arrive on February 18.

The Bangladeshi and Indian governments collaborated to build the Rampal Power Plant. On December 17 of last year, the mega power plant’s first unit started producing 660 MW of electricity on a commercial basis.

Petrobangla to add 3 more LNG terminals

In addition to the two LNG terminals that are presently being used to regasify imported gas, state-owned Petrobangla has moved to build three new LNG terminals. The three new LNG terminals that are being discussed will be built in the cities of Payra, Moheshkhali, and Matarbari, with a combined regasification capacity of 2000–3000 MMcf/d. Since 2018, there have been two floating storage and regasification units in operation

Rooppur Power Plant loan repayment dispute

To resolve the dispute over the US$210 million loan repayment for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) project, Bangladesh and Russia will hold a "in person" meeting. Three installments of the $500 million borrowed from the Russian Federation by the Bangladeshi government for a feasibility and infrastructure development study of RNPP were not repaid.

Govt to purchase 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) has given the go-ahead for two proposals to acquire 70,000 metric tonnes of fertilizers and 33.60 lakh MMBtu of LNG to address the rising demand. Led by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal, the committee convened virtually for its 11th meeting this year, where a total of seven proposals were approved. The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will purchase 40,000 metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer from OCP, SA, Morocco, amounting to about Tk 262.13 crore, as per the Ministry of Agriculture's proposal.
