Record tea production amping up agro-economy

Despite the worldwide crises and the Covid-19 outbreak, an all-time high of 17.759 million kilograms (kg) of processed tea worth Taka 284 crore was produced in five northern districts last year.

The production of processed tea last year, which was 17.759 million kg, was up 3.219 million kg from the 14.54 million kg produced in 2021, according to officials with the Bangladesh Tea Board (BTBPanchagarh )’s regional office. In Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, and Lalmonirhat districts, plain-land tea cultivation grew despite the world crisis last year.

In these five districts, tea was grown on 12,079 acres of land by owners of nine registered and 21 unregistered tea plantations as well as 8,355 small landowners, who produced more than 90,274 million kg of green tea leaves in 2022.25 companies operating in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, and Lalmonirhat combined to process the 90.274 million kilograms of green tea leaves, yielding 17.759 million kilograms of processed tea in 2022 which is 22.13 percent increase over production in 2021.

In 2022, five northern districts produced 17.759 million kg of processed tea, which is 18.92 percent of the country’s total production of 93.83 million kg.
