Over the past 15 years, Bangladesh’s public and private sectors have made progress in providing farmers with high-quality vegetable and grain seeds. However, due to a lack of interest from formal authorities, the supply of standard oilseeds and pulses has remained stagnant.

According to the BSA, private enterprises provide 86% of the vegetable seeds and 97% of the hybrid rice seeds used by farmers. There is a 17% supply of oilseeds required to create edible oil, which Bangladesh mainly imports, compared to a requirement of 3,657 tonnes.

Additionally, the rate of supply of high-quality seeds against a demand of 3,370 tonnes for pulses, which are also primarily imported, is 13%.
