Waiver certification process delayed for foreign container ships

Domestic airports in Bangladesh rely heavily on revenue generated by Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. According to data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the organization generated approximately Tk1,911 crore in the fiscal year 2021-22, primarily from the operation of these airports, while spending approximately Tk960 crore to maintain and run these facilities. The Shahjalal International Airport, the country's largest and busiest airport, produced Tk1,597 crore of the overall revenue.

After successfully hosting larger boats at Chattogram port in early 2022, the Chattogram Port Authority issued an official notification on Sunday inviting foreign shippers to send cargo carriers up to 200 metres in length with a draught of 10 metres to Bangladesh's top seaport.

SN Corporation is the second green yard in Bangladesh, adhering to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Standards for Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling. It employs over 300 employees and dismantles between 90,000-100,000 tonnes of scrap materials each year. Green shipyards prioritize worker safety and health by enforcing strict safety regulations, providing personal protective equipment, and providing training programs.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine War caused the import of raw materials to become scarce and expensive, and the already struggling shipbreaking industry in Chattogram was unprepared for these twin shocks. Catastrophic effects are also being felt by the steel and oxygen industries built in the port city's shipbreaking industry. Approximately 50,000 people have lost their jobs as a result of the closure of 80% of steel, oxygen, and shipbreaking yards in the previous three years.

 

 

 

Australia's AIS Marine & Offshore Pty Ltd has submitted two offers to Bangladesh Shipping Corporation(BSC) for the supply of six new container ships. AIS Marine's first plan is to provide a $300 million low-interest loan, while the second offer is for the delivery of the ships through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
