About 10 lakh tons of potato would remain unsold this year due to excess production. The Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA) urged the government to reduce the price to Tk 9 per kilo.
BCSA President Md Mosharaf Hossain said that over 11 million tons of potatoes are being produced due to the cultivation in more lands in the current year. 4 million tons of potatoes were stored in 400 cold storages in March and April. The annual demand for potatoes in Bangladesh is about 9 million tons. So, there is a possibility of having a surplus of about 1.5 million tons of potatoes.
The price of potato remains low at both retail and cold storage gates because of ample stocking, stockiest and cold storage operators. Farmers and stockiest are incurring losses as Tk 9 per kilograms of potato against production and storage costs of nearly Tk 18 per kilograms.
Farmers bagged 1.06 crore tons of potato this calendar year, up 10 per cent from 96 lakh tons in calendar year 2020, shows data from the Department of Agricultural Extension, and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
And excluding seeds, if consumption is taken into consideration during the rest of the season, 10 lakh tons of potato would remain unsold this year, reported (BCSA).
