Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday directed the relevant authorities to investigate why rice prices are rising amid the country’s harvest season.She also ordered authorities to take prompt action if anyone is seen unlawfully storing rice.
The ministers of commerce and food, as well as the secretaries of commerce, food, and agriculture, were also given instructions to convene a conference to undertake the market survey as soon as possible.”There was a long discussion on the market mechanism outside of the conference agenda, especially the rice and oil prices,” Anwarul stated.Soon after the Boro season finished, paddy and rice prices both skyrocketed.In the last several days, retail prices in Dhaka have risen by Tk 2-3 per kg. Traders predict that prices will rise even faster in the near future.
