Despite the fact that the country is expected to have a bumper Boro crop this season and farmers have already harvested 94 per cent of the crop, the rice market has suddenly become turbulent.Rice prices have risen by Tk 1-2 per kg in wholesale and retail markets over the last three days, following a Tk 6-8 per kg increase in milling hubs over the previous two weeks. According to the Agriculture Ministry, 2,11,57,221 tonnes of Boro rice will be harvested this season, which is 2,05,919 tonnes more than the season’s goal and 2,71,958 tonnes more than the total production of 2,08,85,263 tonnes last year.
Boro has so far been harvested from 45.66 lakh hectares of land across the country, accounting for 94.44 per cent of the total.Fine rice Miniket prices in Dhaka’s Rampura, Malibagh, and Segunbagicha retail markets increased to Tk 66-67 per kg on Monday, up from Tk 64-65 three days before.Seasonal new BRRI 28 and 29 variety medium rice prices were Tk 52-53 per kg, up from Tk 50-51 previously, while the paijam variety was Tk 50-51 per kg, up from Tk 49-51 previously.Paddy prices in Jashore, Dinajpur, Rajshahi, Kushtia, Rangpur, Joypurhat, and Naogaon have also increased by Tk 5-6 per kg in the last week, according to traders and mill owners.
