Sugar reached Tk105-Tk110 per kg in Dhaka as vendors blamed a supply deficit that had been going on for at least a week. The commerce ministry set the price per kg of brand-name sugar at Tk95 and non-brand-name sugar at Tk90 on October 6. According to a wholesaler of sugar, the continuous gas supply issue caused sugar production to fall by 50 per cent.
Bangladesh imported 17 lakh tonnes of sugar through Chattogram port in FY22, according to Chattogram customs. In FY21, imports totaled 21 lakh tonnes.
Six of the 15 government sugar mills have shut down in the last two years, bringing the yearly outputs down to 48,000 tonnes and 25,000 tonnes, respectively. Due to this, the local sugar industry now mainly relies on private mills.
