The entire paddy field was flooded, devastating the crops, due to premature floods induced by increased water flow to the river from upstream and heavy rainfall. This flood has shattered the dreams of teesta growers.
Growers in Rajour char, Lalmonirhat sadar upazila, and Bogurapara, Rajarhat upazila, Kurigram, are suffering massive losses as a result of massive loans from NGO or other sources for farming.
The unexpected floods have harmed boro paddy and various vegetables, according to Shamim Ashraf, deputy director of the DAE in Lalmonirhat.
During the dry season, more than 50,000 char farmers cultivate maize, paddy, wheat, and spices on 75,000-80,000 hectares of land along the 115-kilometer-long Teesta river bed, spread across 12 upazilas in five districts: Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, Nilphamari, and Gaibandha, according to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) sources.
