Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) market is slowly spreading in Bangladesh. As per the Bangladesh Unani Aushad Shilpa Samity, this traditional medicine market is increasing by 5-10 per cent each year.
Bangladesh is naturally filled with genetic diversities of medicinal plants. Nearly 546 to 722 plant species of medicinal value grow in Bangladesh, noted Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.
Industry insiders say 30-40 per cent of people are being directly facilitated from traditional medicines for primary healthcare while 80 per cent are indirectly dependent. Besides, over 486 industries manufacture CAM in the country while the annual consumption of medicinal plants hovering about 20,000 tonnes.
