In the next fiscal year 2024-25, Bangladesh’s budget allocation for importing rice and wheat increases by 34%, totaling Tk 6,696 crore compared to Tk 4,990 crore in the current fiscal year. However, the allocation for internal food procurement decreases by 18% to Tk 7,441 crore from Tk 8,750 crore. Additionally, Tk 5,316 crore is earmarked for expanding open market sales (OMS) of rice and flour, a decrease from Tk 5,800 crore. The government aims to issue smart OMS cards for purchasing subsidized rice and flour, initially distributing 6,000 cards. Furthermore, under the food-friendly program, 5 million families will receive 30 kg of rice at Tk 15 per kg for six months, requiring an estimated subsidy of Tk 7,000 crore. This initiative is driven by concerns over global food production decrease and exchange rate fluctuations, aiming to ensure food security amidst economic challenges.
