Tax authorities are considering stricter measures, including disconnecting utility services, to collect a 15% tax from private universities. Tk148 crore was collected last week from fixed deposits of three universities. The Appellate Division ruled that private universities must pay a 15% tax on their income, amounting to Tk800 crore. Despite instructions, none positively responded, leading to the freezing of over 28 accounts. Around Tk170 crore was collected from over 10 universities. Some universities are still unwilling to pay. The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh requested instalment payments, but the request was denied. If the situation persists, most universities may face financial distress. Over 100 private universities are in the country.
