The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) is set to install 500,000 smart prepayment meters by 2025 as part of a pilot project to modernize the country’s energy infrastructure. This initiative falls under BREB’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution, which aims to eventually connect all 3.5 crore consumers to smart prepayment meters.
In June of the previous year, BREB signed a contract with Oculin Tech BD and SQ Wires and Cables Co to implement the AMI system. The Project Director Engineer highlighted that the project will initially focus on setting up a Meter Information Centre (MIC) to manage data, billing, and consumer communication, akin to online mobile banking. This first phase will procure 490,000 meters and establish a system capable of supporting 5 million meters.
