The Bangladesh government is considering reducing the source tax on incomes from the supply of essential food commodities in an effort to combat rising inflation. This initiative aims to ease the financial burden on suppliers and ultimately help lower the prices of staple foods for consumers.
Currently, suppliers of essential food items such as rice, wheat, potato, onion, maize, edible oil, salt, and sugar are subjected to a 2 percent source tax on their revenues. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is contemplating a proposal to reduce this tax rate to 1 percent starting from the fiscal year 2024-25, which begins in July. This proposal will be part of the tax-related measures included in the upcoming budget.
