Domestically Produced Goods Account for 72.5% of Inflation

Economic Tag: Inflation

A Bangladesh Bank report released, indicates a shift in the factors influencing inflation. In January of this year, the impact of imported goods on inflation decreased to 27.5% from 32.3% the previous month, largely due to lower food import costs. Meanwhile, the contribution of domestically produced goods to inflation rose to 72.5% from 67.7%, driven by increased prices of both food and non-food items.

Since August 2022, fully or partially imported goods have significantly affected inflation due to rising international prices. These items, including those made with imported materials, accounted for about one-third of overall inflation between July 2023 and March 2024.Despite a recent decline in the contribution of import-heavy items in March this year, BB warns that ongoing depreciation pressures on the taka may alter this trend in the coming months.
