Starting June 6, the new Customs Act will enforce mandatory electronic scanning for all imported and exportable goods, with exemptions only as specified by the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The Ministry of Finance formalized this with a Statutory Regulatory Order issued on May 30, following the Act’s passage by parliament in October 2023. Under the new law, a 10% interest will be imposed on any customs duties or charges not paid by the due date. The NBR is currently drafting the necessary rules for the Act’s implementation. This regulation aims to streamline customs procedures and enhance compliance. The Chattogram Custom House in Chattogram will be central to this initiative, ensuring no goods are cleared from the port without the required electronic scanning.
