In a media release, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) urged Bangladesh and Pakistan to release $320 million and $411 million respectively, of revenues blocked from foreign airlines, citing violations of international agreements. The total blocked funds globally decreased by 28%, reaching $1.8 billion by April, with Nigeria and Egypt significantly clearing blocked funds. Willie Walsh, IATA’s director general, emphasized the importance of promptly addressing remaining blocked funds for airlines’ economic viability. Bangladesh and Pakistan face severe situations, with $731 million combined funds remaining blocked. Walsh called for immediate release to ensure vital air connectivity, suggesting Bangladesh prioritize aviation’s access to foreign exchange, while Pakistan seeks efficient alternatives to current processing delays.
