Despite a potential record maize harvest in 2023, small livestock, fisheries, and poultry farms see minimal benefit as feed costs remain high. Maize prices have dropped to Tk 24-28 per kg from Tk 32-38 per kg two months ago, yet feed prices for poultry, fish, and dairy remain at Tk 60-75 and Tk 58-65 per kg, respectively. Farmers are selling maize at Tk 22-24 per kg, with agents from major feed companies buying at Tk 26-28 per kg.
Production costs for poultry have risen above Tk 195 per kg, with farm owners earning a profit of only Tk 4.0-6.0 per kg. The feed mill syndicate is accused of manipulating prices due to farmers’ limited storage capacity. Companies purchase dry maize at Tk 32 per kg, while soya cake remains costly at Tk 65-68 per kg. Maize constitutes 60% of animal feed composition. The annual demand for animal feed is nearly 6.5 million tonnes, with local production meeting 99% of this demand. The agriculture ministry forecasts a yield of 5.8 million tonnes of maize this year, up from 4.6 million tonnes last year.
