The Bangladesh Economic Association revealed that over the past 50 years, Tk 11.92 lakh crore has been smuggled out of Bangladesh. From the fiscal year 1972-73 to 2022-23, this substantial amount reflects widespread money laundering. Additionally, the accumulation of black money within the country has reached Tk 1.32 lakh crore. To address this issue, the association recommended recovering 0.49% of the laundered money, aiming to reclaim Tk 5,000 crore in the new financial year. They also suggested recovering 0.98% of the total black money, which would amount to Tk 10,000 crore. In line with these recommendations, the association proposed an alternative budget of Tk 11.95 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2024-25, which is 1.57 times larger than the government’s current budget.
