The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and HSBC Bank have launched a three-year project titled “Climate-Smart Rice Value Chain in the haor region” to transform rice production in Bangladesh’s haor region. This initiative aims to address challenges faced by rice farmers due to climate change by introducing new rice varieties, promoting sustainable farming practices, enhancing seed systems, increasing mechanization, and raising awareness about rice innovations. The project will benefit 10,000 rice value chain actors across five upazilas in Sunamganj and Kishoreganj. IRRI’s digital tools, such as the Rice Crop Manager and Rice Doctor, will assist farmers in making informed decisions. The project aligns with HSBC Bangladesh’s commitment to climate adaptation and mitigation, aiming to improve food security, economic prosperity, and resilience in the haor region, which is highly vulnerable to climate change impacts. The collaborative effort includes government departments, NGOs, universities, and farmers to ensure its success.
