In the past five days, textile production in key industrial areas such as Tongi, Sreepur, Gazipur, and Maona has declined by around 65% due to low gas pressure. Factories require 10-15 PSI of gas pressure but are receiving only 1-3 PSI, with some units experiencing zero pressure. This gas shortage threatens monthly production targets and timely shipments, particularly affecting the $25 billion primary textile sector, where 60% of operations are concentrated. Factory owners are concerned about missing export targets and facing increased production costs due to the ongoing gas crisis. The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has requested urgent improvements in gas supply from Petrobangla, which identified a leakage in the floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) as the cause. Repairs may take a week if done locally or up to a month if the FSRU is sent abroad. The uncertainty around gas pressure improvement remains high.
