Three-fourths of Bangladesh’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs) posted profits from July to April in the current fiscal year, but the losses of a few overshadowed their success. Out of 49 SOEs, 12 incurred a combined loss of Tk 19,395 crore, while 38 firms logged a total profit of Tk 13,353 crore. The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation led the profitable SOEs with Tk 4,875 crore, followed by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority and the Chittagong Port Authority. In contrast, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) faced the highest loss at Tk 6,118 crore due to capacity charges, LNG imports, and currency depreciation. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board also reported significant losses. Experts attribute these losses to poor governance, inefficiency, and corruption. To mitigate losses, they recommend improved accountability, strategic planning for SOEs, and government subsidies to support essential services and modernize outdated infrastructure.
