The World Bank projects steady economic growth for Bangladesh, forecasting an increase to 5.7% in the upcoming fiscal year and 5.9% in FY 2025-26. The current fiscal year’s real GDP growth is estimated at 5.6%, impacted by elevated inflation reducing real wage growth and private consumption, and higher borrowing costs dampening demand. For FY25 and FY26, the forecasted growth is driven by increased private consumption due to easing inflation and the implementation of large investment projects. The World Bank’s June edition of Global Economic Prospects highlights that shortages of inputs and imported goods are expected to gradually ease, and a more flexible exchange rate policy will help boost remittance inflows and reduce balance of payments pressures. Despite these positive projections, they remain below the government’s targets of 6.75% for FY25 and 7.0% for FY26, and are slower compared to previous years. The report also notes that high levels of non-performing loans in the banking sector have dampened investor confidence.
