The High Court issued a contempt of court rule against the NBR Chairman for not complying with its 2020 verdict, which required a biannual report on tax collection from Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo, Amazon, and other web-based companies. The HC asked the NBR Chairman to explain within four weeks why contempt proceedings should not be drawn against him for violating the November 8, 2020 order. This verdict highlighted the unfortunate situation of these companies not paying income tax and mandated their VAT registration under the 2012 Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act. The HC directed the government to take immediate steps to collect all due taxes and VAT from these companies’ revenues and required the NBR Chairman to submit a tax collection report every six months.
