AC Industry Opposes Tariff Hike on VRF and VRV Units

Industry: Electronics, Home Appliances

The Bangladesh Refrigeration and Airconditioning Merchants Association (Brama) has raised concerns over proposed increases in import duties for VRF (variable refrigerant flow) and VRV (variable refrigerant volume) ACs and compressors in the 2024-25 fiscal year. They argue that the new HS code will raise duties from 11% to 49%, potentially reaching up to 60%, which could negatively impact AC businesses, consumers, and lead to higher electricity consumption. Brama members advocate for retaining the previous HS code (8415.10.10) instead of adopting the new one (8415.10.20), highlighting that VRF and VRV ACs are crucial for large-scale projects like hospitals and government initiatives such as metro rail projects. They estimate about 100,000 people are employed in this sector, with an annual turnover of approximately Tk 2,000 crore. Concerns include potential disruptions to ongoing projects and increased costs if the new tariff structure is implemented, urging a review to mitigate adverse effects on the industry.
