The price of Indian onions in Bangladesh’s domestic market has decreased following continued imports through the Hili land port in Dinajpur. Initially sold at Tk 68-70 per kg at the port, prices have dropped to Tk 66 per kg, with retail prices stabilizing around Tk 70 per kg. Recently, six trucks imported a total of 180 tons of onions through this port. In contrast, domestic onion prices remain steady at Tk 80 per kg in local markets. India lifted its export ban on onions on May 4 but imposed a 40% export duty and set a minimum export price of $550 per ton, influencing imported onion prices to hover around 65-70 taka per kg initially, slightly above local onion prices of 60-65 taka per kg. Following a brief hiatus, onion imports through Hili land port resumed on June 4 after a 21-day pause, aiming to meet market demand and stabilize prices amidst fluctuating supply dynamics.
