A 100-megawatt solar-power plant in Madarganj, Jamalpur district, will be developed through a US$170 million joint venture between China’s CREC International Renewable Energy Company and Bangladesh’s BR Powergen Limited. The agreement, signed in Dhaka, stipulates CREC holding 70% ownership, with BRPL owning the remaining 30%. Expected to be operational by December 2025, the plant aims to contribute to Bangladesh’s goal of generating 40% of electricity from clean sources by 2040. The project will relocate 241 families and includes community facilities like a school, health center, mosque, market, pond, and graveyard. Concurrently, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology launched a 3.27-megawatt-peak Rooftop Solar Project, funded by IDCOL and implemented with GPPS Consortium Ltd. It’s projected to save BUET Tk 600 million in electricity costs over 30 years, marking a significant move towards renewable energy in Bangladesh’s educational sector.
