The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh is grappling with a significant issue: out of 1.4 crore Tax Identification Number (TIN) holders, about 67 lakh have not filed their tax returns as of May 31. It’s anticipated that around 40 lakh TIN holders may skip filing returns this fiscal year. Reasons for non-compliance include 10 lakh new TIN holders expected to file returns in the upcoming fiscal year, with categories like land sales and specific services accounting for 5.28 lakh and 3.75 lakh respectively. Experts recommend streamlining the TIN database by removing entries of those unlikely to file due to valid reasons, while calling for more efficient management systems to handle these complexities.
